Tips
for Searching BWLET.net using Reference Web Poster
- General Searches
It is advisable to use the ‘advanced search’ method rather than the
‘quick search’ when using Reference Web Poster.
- Finding specific
titles/ authors
Type in the information required in the advanced search using the drop
down menus (Author, Title, Keyword
etc.). A maximum of 350 records will then be displayed in long form
with the search element appearing in bold. For more information on specific
records click on the book icon to the left of the reference. All references
appear in date order with the most recent appearing first.
- All Authors should
be searched using the search criteria First name followed
by Surname e.g. Ann Griffiths, Alan Llwyd or in the
case of bardic names: Dafydd ap Gwilym, Iolo Goch.
- A less common surname
or first name like: Abse, Parry-Williams or Bobi, Menna will also work.
Use the Index of Authors
& Translators
to help you with unusual spellings and so on
- In the case of
authors who use initials for example R. S. Thomas be aware
that Reference Web Poster does not reflect initial database customization
and will close the gaps in the ‘Author’ field - though not in any other
field. A search for R. S. Thomas in the ‘non-indexed field’ would find
his work as translator (see below for tips on finding translators) but
the user would then have to try: R.S.Thomas (no gaps) to view translations
from his Welsh language prose for example. The same goes for: R.Williams
Parry, T.H.Parry-Williams, T.P.Ellis and so on. In the case of these
authors, then, in order to see what they have written and translated:
a search in the fields: ‘non-indexed’ (gaps) and ‘Author’ (no gaps)
should be used. Fortunately it is only these authors whose initials
are used who appear to suffer from this software peculiarity.
- Finding translators
The RWP software does not recognize 3 authors (e.g. original author,
translator and editor). In order to overcome this the names of translators
have often been added on to the title field. It is recommended therefore
that you search using ‘all non-indexed fields’ when you are deliberately
searching for translators use this with the ‘and’ function in ‘advanced
search’ with ‘author’ also.
- Full Record
When you have clicked on the book icon you will be given a marked reference
page. The information on this page includes notes and keywords as well
as specific information regarding the publication. Due to the peculiarities
of this package it does not recognize any part of a book as anything
other than ‘chapter’. For this reason the ‘Notes’ section will state
clearly the nature of the translation. For example: ‘Translation in
Book’, ‘Translation in Journal’ and so on.
- Abbreviations
There are a number of abbreviated forms used on the BWLET.net database.
For example: (i.) refers to an incomplete translation or extract; (u.)
denotes that a translation has been unsigned; (a.) refers to an adaptation
of an original work; (p.t.) used in the 'keywords' field refers to the
presence of the original alongside the translation (it does not always
refer to a literal parallel text).
- Wild Card Searching
Both Advanced and Quick Search assume wild card searches at the end
of two or more characters entered as a search term. For example, for
the term "war" the result may include "warren" and
"warden." DO NOT input an asterisk (*) or it will be searched
for as such.
- Marking the Citation
Records of Interest
Records of interest can be marked and later downloaded to a disk or
printed. Click on the check box next to the record, or for all of the
records click on the Mark All button at the top of the list.
- Printing Records
Records may be printed individually from the screen or by clicking on
Show Marked List to print the citation records.
- Exporting Records
Records may be exported to a disk as a text file using the RIS FORMAT.
Click on the Export button and select the RIS FORMAT button. Two other
export options are available but are limited by individual user's access
to the necessary plug-ins.
- Viewing multiple
references
Always use the 'Next Page' and 'Previous Page' buttons at the bottom
of the search screen. The 'Go to Page' and individual number icons are
unreliable on large searches. To ensure that you view each page in order
it is advisable to simply use the 'Next Page' facility or the 'Back'/
'Forward' buttons on your own webpage.
