BWLET.net in its national context

This project will be an important contribution for a number of reasons:

With the creation of the National Assembly for Wales the biculturalism of Wales has become a matter of urgent practical, as well as ideological, interest;

The continuing settlement in Wales of non-Welsh-speaking newcomers has again highlighted the urgent need for a wide variety of cross-cultural initiatives;

Several leading Welsh language writers have come to acknowledge the ways in which translation of their work into English may be of service not only to them as creative artists but to the Welsh language culture to which they remain committed;

There is a very active concern to recognize a new, multicultural Britain;

Anglophone culture worldwide has begun to shown an interest in Welsh language literature – witness the inclusion of materials in anthologies edited by Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes, and by Robert Crawford;

Translation Studies is a development of academic interest, and yet the absence of a “map” of Welsh-English translation means that this, one of the richest fields in the British context, is never examined.
